It was from stories like this one (A PARABLE), and there were many, that I became frustrated at the lack of accessible information available to families who were entering into the system of child abuse investigation.

 

One of the major damaging effects of sexual abuse is that of disempowerment and loss of control. Too often I was seeing this dynamic repeated in the aftermath of notification. I knew it didn’t have to be that way. I had met plenty of skilled and dedicated social workers and plenty of caring and protective parents – they could make up a great team in the quest to protect children. One thing I could foresee making a difference was simple, clear, open information about the process that families would be entering once they chose to disclose.

 

This information would also. I hoped, help them to make the choice to notify - after all how many of us would not be dubious about committing to a process we knew next to nothing about? I took a lot of my thinking and moaning and grizzling back home to my partner. He eventually threw me out the challenge “why wait for someone else to do it?”  And hence, with the support of the Commissioner of Children and the Child Protection Trust, the assistance of the parents and professionals who donated their time to the project and the considerable efforts of the Electronic Media Foundation, we have the “What Will Happen If I Tell?” Programme.
